Indoor Miniature Snow Scenes (Show 1264)

The Zucchini Brothers and Susan (and Polly the dog) had fun at the ZucchiniLand Winter Carnival, but when you're not able to go outside and play in the snow (or it's not winter in your home town), why not bring the fun indoors?

If you have access to real snow, then try making miniature snow people! Just bring a bowl full of snow indoors. Using a dish or baking sheet as a surface, make little snow people. Use cloves or raisins for facial features, twigs for arms--you get the idea. But of course, you'll have to work quickly and then store your little snow creatures in the freezer or in a small space (like a plastic container) outdoors.

If you don't have access to real snow--or if you want to make a realistic miniature snow scene that'll last--give this a try...

You'll need:

     * a piece of cardboard (from a cardboard box or the back of a pad of paper)

     * scissors

     * gentle powder laundry detergent (the kind advertised for washing baby clothes)

     * water

     * a blender

     * tiny natural objects (pebbles, twigs, sticks, dry leaves, tiny pinecones, pine needles, cinnamon sticks, nuts, geodes, crystals, acorns, acorn tops, pieces of bark, etc.)

First, cut a circular piece of cardboard approximately 7" in diameter. This will be the foundation.

Next, whip together 1 3/4 cups of detergent and 1 cup of water in a blender until the consistency resembles shaving cream. This will be the snow. With a spoon, spread about 6 Tbs. of this substance onto the cardboard foundation.

Now, take your time arranging a lovely snow scene by placing the natural objects however you like. You might even want to make a larger scene with a miniature shelter (like a cabin or tipi made from cardboard, construction paper, fabric, sticks, or whatever you have on hand). You could use pieces of aluminum foil to create an icy body of water, or larger, stubby pinecones could be trees. Let your imagination soar, as you create a peaceful winter scene! It may take several hours for the "snow" to dry, so wait a while before moving it.
